I have had the BuckyBalls brand magnets for a while. They’re a lot of fun and creative, but they’re pricey for a little office toy. I saw these Magnet Balls and decided to give them a shot because they’re nearly half the price of BuckyBalls. Having read some reviews for other BuckyBalls competitors I was concerned that these would be differently sized than BuckyBalls. Well these are exactly the same as BuckyBalls as far as appearance goes. The only difference so far is that they don’t seem as powerful as buckyballs. It’s very subtle, but obvious after having played with BuckyBalls for so long. They also seem a tiny bit lighter in weight. Perhaps that’s why they’re cheaper. There may be less magnetic material in each ball. Despite them not being quite as great as buckyballs, they’re still pretty great. If you’ve never played with BuckyBalls, you probably wouldn’t know the difference. You can make all the same shapes, and it’s a decent value.

Pros Cons I got some Bucky Balls as a gift and really liked them and wanted more these small magnets. So I bought some Nanospheres, 231 Original Rare Earth Magnetic Balls (compare to Buckyballs, Neocube, Cybercube, Zen Magnets, Magnet balls) 15 extra balls! as well as some Magnet Balls Original Edition – Magnetic Earth Magnet Puzzle in Collector’s Tin From looking online at Amazon they all looked like the same thing and examining all three products they are virtually identical. So much so that they may all be from the same source. I noticed a review stating Magnet Balls were lighter, but I have a decent scale some calipers and all three products consist of Axially Magnetized; .216 gram; 5 mm spheres. There was some variation in strength, but I noticed that between batches of the same product. As far as I can tell the magnetic strength (out of the box) is the same besides if they were much stronger it would become too difficult to handle them. Two spheres will ‘jump’ together on a flat surface if placed within 5 mm and I was able to take a string of about 200 (of each product) and pick up three cubes (216 each). All Three Products are good and each has an advantage. A few of pages of examples would benefit all these products (and cost next to nothing to add), but the main fun is creating your own magnetic sculptures. Bucky Balls have the best container (small plastic cube which can be used to ‘cut’ into bunches or strings of balls and an instruction sheet which is nice, but are by far the most expensive. Note one reviewer classed these as inferior to Buckyballs I expect that was a batch issue, I have several of each and one set (of the Buckyballs as it happens) is a bit ‘off’ the chrome is a bit rough to the touch and the strength is a bit inferior to all the others. My guess is that it is very likely these are all manufactured in the same Chinese factory.

I own several sets of the competing product, Bucky Balls. There aren’t as good as Bucky Balls, seeming to have about half the strength. The Bucky Balls you can easily form in a giant loop without them breaking, these barely hold in longer strands. I was hoping to use these as a cheap source of replacement balls for my Bucky Ball sets, but not such luck. It’s obvious when I substitute them in. And this is a vendor issue more than the item itself, but when shipped, these came loose in the shipping box with a pamphlet and a little carrying bag. On the plus side, the box had 224 balls in it, not 216. So at least this set has some extras. |

Magnet Balls are well priced (about the same per ball as Nanospheres) and come in a cube packed in a ‘tin’ They come in several colors I tried the chrome and gold both were good quality
Nanospheres Are my my choice (the least expensive by a very small margin) particularly as they come in a cooler shape the Octahedron and 15 ‘extra’ balls (beyond what you need for a cube, but just enough for Octahedron)
